Важнейшие битвы в ходе Войны за независимость [Revolutionary War]. Пытаясь подавить антиколониальные выступления американцев, английские военные стратеги предложили план захвата долины р. Хадсон [Hudson River] путем нанесения ударов по Олбани, Филадельфии и Нью-Йорку и подавления сопротивления разобщенных колоний. 17 сентября 1777 англичане под командованием генерала Дж. Бергойна [Burgoyne, John] атаковали лагерь американцев у Бемис-Хайтс [Bemis Heights], который обороняли соединения под командованием Г. Гейтса [Gates, Horatio], но были отброшены с большими потерями. 17 октября 1777 после нескольких сражений у г. Саратога около 5 тыс. англичан сдались американской армии. При этом Г. Гейтс проявил редкое на войне великодушие: когда при капитуляции Бергойн заявил ему: "Военная фортуна сделала меня Вашим пленником, генерал Гейтс" ["The fortune of war, General Gates, has made me your prisoner"], тот ответил: "Я всегда буду готов клятвенно заявить, что в этом нет какой-либо вины Вашей светлости" ["I shall always be ready to testify that it has not been through any fault of your Excellency"]. Эта крупнейшая победа американцев подняла их моральный дух и стала переломным пунктом в войне, а Франция поспешила стать союзником США. На месте этого крупнейшего сражения Войны за независимость в пригороде Саратога-Спрингса, шт. Нью-Йорк, создан Национальный исторический заповедник "Саратога" [Saratoga National Historical Park]
